Transit Safety Tips
While the San Diego transit system is generally safe, we encourage SDSU affiliates to practice common safety and transit etiquette tips. If you’re new to using transit, take extra care to ensure you’re safe. These tips will help you have a positive experience and equip you to handle unexpected circumstances if they arise.
- Ride in the front car of the trolley or the bus to be near the operator.
- Call or text MTS if you have security concerns - save this number to your contacts for quick access: 619-595-4960.
- You can send photos or videos if needed.
- Know where the emergency buttons are located on the MTS trolley.
- When waiting for a bus or trolley, stand in a well-lit area with others around.
- Travel with at least one other person whenever possible. Traveling in a group can increase your security.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid wearing noise-canceling headphones and keep the volume low enough to hear.
- Change trains or move seats if you do not feel safe or comfortable.
- Listen for public announcements and follow the directions provided.
- Do not display money or valuables in public.
- Keep your personal belongings such as bags, purses, and backpacks on your lap or between your feet. Do not leave them on an empty seat.
- Decline engaging in conversation from strangers if you do not feel comfortable speaking to them.
Report issues at the SDSU Transit Station to UPD by calling 9-1-1 for emergencies. Call 619-594-1991 or email [email protected] for non-emergencies.
